WhatsApp is an application that allows encrypted messages for smartphones. Former Yahoo employees Jan Koum and Brian Acton created the company in 2009. Facebook acquired the application for $19 billion in 2014.
Koum has achieved what many dream of when building an application or company. He speaks to an audience at Stanford University and discuses his journey, setbacks, and how the WhatsApp product developed from an idea into a billion dollar ‘unicorn’ company.
The purchase has drawn criticism from those who believe that many of the technology companies based around the Silicon Valley area are overvalued and do not have sustainable business models, and time will reveal whether the criticisms are valid or not.
