The secret of motivation

The writer Mark Twain once stated that, ‘The secret of getting ahead is getting started.’ This observation lies at the root of a great deal of uncertainty that inflicts the mind of unfortunate people who find themselves at the receiving end of calamitous circumstances.

This following story reveals why many never find the necessary drive to pursue their dreams or follow their purpose.

The dog and the nail story

There was a young man walking down the street and happened to see an old man sitting on his porch. Next to the old man was his dog, who was whining and whimpering. The young man asked the old man “What’s wrong with your dog” The old man said, “He’s laying on a nail”. The young man asked “Laying on a nail?, Well why doesn’t he get up?” The old man then replied “It’s not hurting bad enough.”

This story explains what happens to a large number of people within societies all around the world. Instead of whimpering like a dog, they complain about government, taxes, money, their lack of money, the system, immigration, their parents, their children, their bosses, their employees, their husbands, their wives, and so on…

This incessant complaining never has and never will solve problems. Only solution orientated thought and action will ever solves problems.

There are two factors that reveal how a person is motivated; the first is called moving towards motivation. This type of motivation is ignited when a person has such a high level of drive and passion that they are compelled to move towards their object of desire.

The other factor is called moving away motivation, and this means that an individual will not take action until there is such a high level of pain that they cannot stand to be in that situation for a moment longer. This is the situation that the dog in the story found itself in, and many people are in similar situations at this current moment.

If things are not right then they are wrong, and a thing can only be put right if new actions differs from previous actions. If you do the same things then it is axiomatic that the same results will follow, regardless of whether you would want to receive those results or not.

Everything that exists operates under the principle of cause and effect, and also inertia plays a factor in that regard. To put it in a simple fashion, a person that stays at rest will remain at rest unless they are propelled to take action by a compelling force that is greater than the force that keeps them in a stationary position.

To understand those aforementioned points is to understand the secret to motivation. They can be used to motivate others or yourself, and there is a great deal further than can be said on the subject, and yet that is the essence of motivation.

If a person is ‘laying on a nail’ then the real reason why is to do with the person and their level of motivation, so now is a perfect opportunity to examine if there is anything that is holding you back from achieving something, and it may be the case that you are not sufficiently motivated and compelled based on your fears or desires.
